Christmas Eve

Slowly we sang it
slowly

The red-robed sopranos
spread out among us
and the altos
and the basses
all among us
singing slowly
slowly

Ivory candles
tapered to halos
on our faces
silver halos
in the dark gold night
lighting the grand
brass pipes
and the worn
wooden pedals

Slowly we sang it
slowly
and the silent night
never seemed so holy
