So much traffic on those airwaves........

.......but we can't see it. My son can hear a lot of it, though. This weekend he talked to people in Greenland, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Italy, South Africa, Svalbard (in the Arctic, off Norway), the Canary Islands, Germany, Scotland, Cuba, Romania, Austria, and Greece. Gotta love ham radio!

Wow! Ham radio-ing must be a lot of fun. I like that about the internet too, that you can talk to people from exotic places :)

I'm sure the Internet has drawn a lot of young people who would otherwise have gone into ham radio. Unfortunately, the radio airwaves are populated largely by old men. My son is always one of the youngest--if not the youngest--at ham gatherings. It's too bad, because it's a great hobby. It's been my son's passion since he was 14. He's even talked to the International Space Station. :-)

Wow.

And don't forget you regularly talk to New Zealand.

That's right! And I ate a kiwi yesterday.

I've toyed with the idea of getting my license--did he have a hard time? Mostly I want my license for emergencies, like how ham radio operators were able to communicate after Katrina before most. I'm always thinking about how to be prepared...plus I could hear repeaters on my multiband radio in high school and they used to freak me out.

Oh, you should, Bridgett. I don't recall that my son had a hard time with any of the tests; I think it all depends on one's level of interest. He has over the years urged me to study for my license--and I don't even know what a repeater is. :-)

I'd like to be a trucker with a ham radio. I'd like to be a trucker, period. I like truck stops!

If you click my name you should get my profile page. There's a link to my mini-blog called "volta unplugged."

Truckers use CB radios, Deloney. They don't require a license. You could get yourself a CB and a well-used pickup and hit all the truck stops you like. :-)

Thanks for the link....I left you a small (but heartfelt) note.
