9/11: Where Were You?
I was working as a newspaper reporter, and had just arrived at my office when my daughter called to tell me about the first tower. Everyone assumed it was an accident at that point. And then it wasn't, and everyone was stunned.
My boss sent me down the block to the courthouse, to interview the Director of Emergency Management. It was there, on his office TV, that we watched the second tower fall.
Where were you?

I was at home. My sister came over to help put tarps on the leaky roof and told me about it. At first I thought she was kidding.
I was right here, at this desk, on this computer. Tim called me from work. I didn't work for the rest of the day. My sister was still living in the city at the time—luckily, she was able to get a call out to my parents fairly early on, who called me to let me know she was fine.
I can't imagine the terror knowing someone I loved was on the scene, and not knowing if they were okay. But so many went through that.
I was walking in downtown Annapolis, MD, which I noticed seemed strangely quiet. Walked back home and my daughter called from California with the news. Then I sat in front of the TV with my dogs, waiting for my husband to get home from his job in Baltimore (he did).
I was on interstate 80 just east of Harrisburg Pennsylvania when the news came on the radio. My first thought was that my brother works in NY City as a private investigator and I was glad he took the day off.
Hey Susan, is all ok?
Everything's fine. Sorry, Crystal. I was immersed in photography dreaming for weeks. I'm coming out of it now. :-)
